A ring should fit snugly- not overly tight, nor loose enough to turn over or fall off. To do this, one must find the correct ring size. The best way to do this is by a real ring sizer, the kind a professional jeweler uses.

A real ring sizer is essentially a key ring with all rings in sizes and a person would just try them on until the correct size is determined. There are also online ring sizers, which are strips of paper that are are tightened around the finger until the rights size is found. There are many, but a good one can be found here.

To properly size a ring, jewelers recommend doing it at the end of the day when the fingers are at their largest, most swollen, possible.

Ring sizes come in increments of one-quarters, with each full size equaling about one-tenth of an inch in interior circumference.

A good trick that many men use prior to buying a ring for their girlfriends is to “steal” a ring for a day that she is not wearing, and bring that to a jeweler to determine her size without alerting her. A jeweler has a ring sizing stick which he would place the ring on and determine the size without her being present.
